Rory‘s background story;
“It all started when I began to feel ill in fifth year of school. Before I knew it, I was off sick for the majority of the school year. After numerous tests, I found out I had Ulcerative Colitis. I was put on medication for it and all was good.
Then a few months later, I started to feel bad again and was eventually diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis and Autoimmune Hepatitis and had to be put on more medication. After school, I was accepted into college and had nearly finished my course when I fell very ill. I was rushed to hospital and after numerous blood tests and scans, I underwent an assessment to see whether I was able to handle a transplant both physically and mentally. I was good to go and received my first liver transplant, however weeks later it had rejected and I had to get another one.
I felt better for five years but in November 2019, I had a massive UC flare up and had to have my large colon removed get an ileostomy so I now have stoma bag. I then suffered from a perforation in the small bowel and had sepsis so I needed two further operations. Once I got home to recover, I ended up needing dialysis to help my kidneys and was in and out of hospital with blockages caused by surgery complications.
In August 2020, I had to get another emergency surgery to cut away scar tissue that was suffocating the bowel and I am now still recovering in hospital. I am only allowed very thin smooth soups yogurts and my main nutrition comes from my NG feed.
The next step is to get a multivisceral transplant down in Cambridge which will replace my current liver and bowel with a new one. This is a major surgery which is very expensive and we are praying that it works.
