Falkirk U15 girls take to the field in a landmark time for Falkirk Rugby

The popularity of rugby has seen an explosion in recent years in respect to females taking up the sport.

For many years we have had a steady stream of girls playing alongside boys in the minis but due to the rules of the game when they go into secondary school they have to play as a girl’s only team.

Last year we launched our first girls’ team; many with little to no experience of rugby but faithfully and in all weather conditions 8 young ladies came to training week in week out.

This year the numbers have doubled. Some of the girls came to the open day to spread the word about girl’s rugby at Falkirk, with more young ladies looking to take up this fantastic sport.

Fearless and committed they are just as good as any of the boy’s teams.

On Sunday the 1st November 2015, a date that will go down in Falkirk’s history. Falkirk U15 girl’s team took to the field in a tournament at Shawlands, Galsgow. We were invited to play in a cup Tournament.

It was a strong line up with established teams from Ayr, Biggar, Cartha, Cumnock, and Hillhead/Jordanhill.

The first game was against Cumnock. The Falkirk Girls started nervously with a few passes being knocked on, but this did not last and they eventually broke through to open the scoring. Cumnock, who relied on their strong pack to play, quickly replied with a try.

Falkirk then changed tactics and coped well with the Cumnock pack with strong aggressive tackling and quick ball from rucks. This resulted with another Falkirk try. Cumnock replied with their second try near the end of the match. The Referee then called “last Play” and Falkirk attacked, but were just forced out on the try line.

The Final score was Falkirk 2 Cumnock 2

The girls played Ayr in the next game and gave a good account against a team that has been playing for a couple of years. Again it was a close game but alas we went down fighting Falkirk 2 Ayr 3.

The third game was against Hillhead/Jordanhill, with Falkirk losing out 4-0 against a good disciplined team.

The last game was against the home team Cartha, again the girls lost out 4-0, but the score line does not tell the story. Falkirk put Cartha under a lot of pressure but with Falkirk losing a couple of players to injury and the remainder tiring, Cartha exploited the situation.

The Coaches were pleased with the way the team played and can see progress in the way the girls played.

If you are interested in playing rugby, please come down.

Training takes place on Wednesday Nights 7:00pm to 8:30pm.

We would like to give credit to our feeder schools of Falkirk High and Larbert High who are promoting girls rugby at their schools, we look forward to hearing from Denny High, Braes High, St Mungos and Graeme High
