Falkirk U16 Boys win the National Bowl final

Falkirk U16 Boys win the National Bowl final

Mark Crawford20 Dec 2023 - 17:49

A large crowd turned out on Sunday to watch the team complete a league and cup double

Falkirk RFC's "Big Weekend" ended with cup glory for the U16 boys who completed a historic league and cup double on the main pitch against Aberdeen Wanderers RFC, watched by a large crowd of vocal supporters, including a sizable away contingent.

With the visitors having already seen off Kelso in the Semi-Final and Biggar in the Quarters, it was always likely to be a stern test for this Falkirk side, but under the watchful eyes of a strong coaching team, they have grown as individuals and as a collective unit over the course of the season.

They went into the fixture full of confidence, having just been confirmed as winners of their league and started brightly, benefiting from a howling wind at their back, and scoring first. Two further tries and a conversion saw them turn the half 17:0 up. However, Wanderers had defended stoutly, managing to hold Falkirk up on two occasions after they'd crossed the try line, and now, with the home side facing into the same driving wind, it was clear that the game was far from over.

Indeed despite Falkirk displaying some excellent defence of their own, Wanderers scored first after the restart. However, Falkirk struck back with a score of their own and never really looked in serious danger of letting the their lead slip, despite a late card.

A final flourish saw further scores for each side and the game finished 29-14.

Both teams can be extremely proud of their performances and decision making in what were very testing conditions. There were a number of standouts in blue and it's perhaps unfair to single out individuals, but on a day which suited forward play rather than expansive rugby, Jamie Barbour won the Falkirk player of the match award. Liam Burns also caught the eye at loosehead with some aggressive carries and Matt Taylor at #8 seemed to have the ball on a string as he recovered it from 3 separate re-starts. Despite the conditions the backs all played their part, barely missing a tackle all game and looking after the ball well in possession.

So this U16 Boys squad have the honour of the first ever trophy win on the current main pitch. Here's to many more, as the future looks bright.
